History - Koratty Sree Mulavallikav Devi Temple

Kerala Mookambika Sree Mulavallikav Devi Temple is considered as one of the most important devi temples among the 108 durga temples (77th) believed to have been consecrated by the legendary warrior Parasurama who is also credited with creating the state of kerala.

The Mulavallikav Devi (soyambhu) Temple known as Mulavallikav Saraswathi Temple, Koratty Devi Temple and also known as "Kerala Mookambika Shetram" (Kerala mookambika Temple) because of whatever  mulavallikav devi pooja vidhi all are same in Kollur Mookambika Devi Temple. 

The presiding deity is bhagavathy and is worshipped in Three different forms Durga, Saraswathi and Lakshmi Goddess Durga is the main deity of this centuries this temple. The  devi is here in her with sankha, chakra, gadha and padmam. Mulavallikav devi is believed to be “Sarvabeeshtapradhayini” (one who grants all wishes). Pilgrims who prays with sincerely and with utmost devotion will be blessed with health, wealth and all.  Mulavallikav Devi is unique among the Hindu gods and goddesses as she embodies the powers of Mahalaxmi, Saraswathi and Mahakali  merged into one as Adiparashakthi.  Soyambu Linga (self manifested phallus) of Mulavallikav Temple represents both Purusha (male) and Sakthi (female). Mulavallikav Devi Temple is one of the most hallowed shrines for hindus in kerala.  It is one of the holiest Siddhi Temple (abode of mystic powers) of the kerala today. Mulavallikav devi is an embodiment of all divine powers. So she can be worshiped in any form. 

Mulavallikavu Devi as Saraswathty is patron Goddess of education and fine arts. Mulavallikav devi can be propitiated for progress in education and accomplishment in fine arts. Also Mulavallikav Devi as Mahalakshmi is the Goddess of wealth. So Devi can be worshiped for progress in business and profession.

According to the legends, lord parasurama created the land between gokarna and kanyakumari. Lord parasurama the sixth incarnation of lord vishnu was the son of sage jamadagni and renuka. As a mark of repentance for shatriya nigraha sin, parasurama meditated at gokarna and invoked lord varuna (the lord of the oceans). Parasurama asked him for a boon to absolve himself of the sins he had committed, he wanted to donate some land to the brahmins. There was no land available because he already donated the whole land he obtained by the 21 round shatriya nigraha to sage kashyapa. Lord varuna told parasurama that he would give him as much land as he wished. He told him to fling his parasu (axe) from where he stood at gokarna. The land from gokarna till the point where the axe landed would be given to him was the boon that lord varuna promised him. The throw of the `axe' from gokarna to kanyakumari created kerala. Parasurama donated this land to the brahmins and settled brahmins there in 64 gramams or villages.  32 out of the 64 gramams are in the Tulu speaking region (in between gokarnam and perumpuzha) and the remaining  32 grammams are in the malayalam speaking region(in between perumpuzha and kanyakumari) in kerala. After the creation of these gramams, parasurama had consecrated 108 shiva temples and 108 durga temples for the well-being and prosperity of the people in kerala . The names of these temples were given in the famous 108 Durgalaya Nama Stothra and 108 shivalaya nama stothra. 

In the time of parasurama kshetra yatra  Load Parasurama have been consecrated 108 durgalaya and 108 Shivalaya's . One of the place is Koratty, Lord parasurama see in the centre of  bamboo trees the chaithanya of adhiparasakthi (Rajarajeshwari) in rock coming from earth (soyambhu) and a thirthakulam also.  Lord parasurama told to raja to create a temple for Adhi Parasakthi.  The raja created a big temple urazhama given to a brahmana ellam  and the temple security charge givan tharamel parnikkar (Tharamel Kalari). The temple  brahmanas conducted special poojas to lord adhiparasakthi. The devi is here in her with sankha, chakra, gadha and padmam. Mulavallikav devi is believed to be “Sarvabeeshtapradhayini” (one who grants all wishes). Pilgrims who prays with sincerely and with utmost devotion will be blessed with health, wealth and all. The special thing is everyday after athazha pooja all piligrims get a special prasadam (ayurveda kashayam). Devi don't like any type of elephent use devi's daily procession in temple compound.  So the raja make a radham  for use for devi's daily procession. That is  in kerala's first radham for devi's daily procession. After the longtime a big war against raja temple fully distroyed. At the same time bhramana ellam left from here to unknown place. Then Urazhama charge raja given to pappat ellam. Now Temple managed by Mulavallikavu Devi Temple Trust under Kerala Shetra Samrakshana Samithi.  

Koratty is a village of about 10 square kilometers in area at the western side of sahiya parvatham , South Angamaly West  Iranikulam and North Chalakudy. The temple situated at koratty padijaremuri (koratty west ) which is the actual heart of koratty , near famous Koratty Shithikandapuram Mahadeva Temple.  And also one of the Vishu Temple Thirunarayanapuram Vishnu  Temple.  It is 5 km away from national highway Koratty and infopark and 2 km from national highway Pongam.
